When most people think of the art scene in New York City, what immediately comes to mind is all of the historic, prestigious and world-renowned galleries that inhabit what is considered to be one of the most creative & artistic cities in the world. But there is a whole other world of art that is prevalent & just as powerful in the city, though it may not be as well known, polished or "pretty" - its the underground, gritty, raw, surreal movement of self-promoting, driven, multi-faceted young artists hungry & ready to dominate and take over NYC's notoriously tough and difficult to break into art scene. Today's post features a phenomenal, creative, uniquely talented, hard-working, very promising young artist who's imagination and passion is limitless. She paints, draws, sculpts, sketches, photographs, illustrates, makes video and sound installations, is involved with fashion, is a performance artist - point blank, she is a creator. Lets delve into her inspirations, past, and most importantly what drove her to where she is today - a true Artist surging through the pretension, stripping away the hype & gloss to "make it" big and become this generation's next Warhol.
How old are you, where did you grow up, and where do you currently live?
I am currently 26 years old. I live above a factory that cleans and paints steel in a loft under a caving in roof with the water pressure of a toddler pissing on you near a duck slaughtering factory and across the street from a sanitation plant in the magical smelly Bushwick, Brooklyn.
When and where did you go to college? What did you major in?
I went to Virginia Commonwealth University in Richmond VA, and graduated in 2005. I majored in Sculpture ♥
Before going to college, what were you childhood dreams, and aspirations of becoming?
Dreams... well I actually was always plagued with crazy nightmares growing up- a fucked up imagination! I'd always freak out my Mom in the morning relaying my dreams back to her.... but i know thats not the dreams your asking yet they went hand n hand for me. My dreams/nightmares begged to be shown in some sort of way.. I always wanted to be an artist - couldnt have imagined anything different.... okay maybe a professional server which i am well on my way to becoming!!
How & why did you decide to change your career choice, during/after college?
I wasn't sure exactly which department i wanted to get into since i love painting, illustration, sculpture, video, fashion- everything and anything art related! but since their Sculpture department was number one in the country and the freest as in you could dive into so many different forms of art to be interpreted as a "sculpturer" I was down!
What are your favorite and least favorite aspects of being an artist?**
I feel the most free when creating- yuck..cheesy i know. Sorry to say, but
I hate artists! i hate Galleries! I hate schmoozing! And i am sick of the bullshit being displayed today!
How difficult is to stay financially afloat while pursuing your art/dreams?
Well, it's hard. Hence my four jobs and the occasional foot hookin
Ideally, where do you see yourself going, professionally or personally, within the next 5 to 10 years?
I see shows! Traveling! My own warehouse studio space with all the tools and equipment needed!
What role does art play in your life?
It is my being.
What do you feel, or how do you respond to, constant misconceptions about art, and the people who work within the field?
I dont mind- people can take and feel how ever they decide from my work
Do you call yourself an artist/painter/sculpter?
All of the above.
Do you feel that you’ve “made it?” Why? And if not, when or what will make you feel that you have?
When I'm working just for my art
What is your advice to anyone who is interested in, or wants to “make it” in the NYC Art Scene?
Dont think about it, JUST DO IT!

I read this with great interest. I really like the way your blog has developed over the semester. And i know it must take a lot of work doing these interviews, transcribing etc. My only advice is to tone down the language a bit in your intro. You paint such over-the-top glowing reports of your people that it I think it does them a disservice. Let their words speak for them, and let your audience decide for themselves if they think they're so awesome. Give it a try. you can always go back to this way, if you don't like it. A-
